WORKING TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Mt. Calvary is partnering with CUW students to participate in an action research project examining the best practice of reading strategies for 1st and 2nd grade students. CUW teacher education students are paired with either a 1st or 2nd grade Mt. Calvary student and are working one on one to implement a variety of reading strategies. This project has a double benefit: 1. Students receive one on one, intensive instruction in language arts, & 2. CUW students gather useful information about urban education.
REACHING OUT….MAKING CONNECTIONS
Students and staff want to spread the word about events taking place at Mt. Calvary! Each classroom has chosen a Mt. Calvary church family unit with whom to make regular contacts throughout the year! Classes will pray for their church buddy, write letters, and personally invite them to school functions. Students and staff want to connect church members with the daily ministry that takes place within YOUR Mt. Calvary Lutheran School. Remember that students love visitors at school, so if you find yourself at Mt. Calvary during the school day, you’re invited to poke your head into one or more classrooms to say “hi!”

FEARFULLY & WONDERFULLY MADE What would the world be like if everything was the same? If all people, animals, buildings, etc. looked and sounded exactly the same, the world would be a rather dull place. Thankfully, we have a creative God who loves variety! The Bible tells us in Psalm 139 that God lovingly designed each of us and that we are wonderfully made by His Hand. Being His masterpieces, we recognize some important things. First, we are UNIQUE. There is nobody else in the world exactly like you. God created you exactly the way you are. He wants us to know how special we are, and how much we matter to Him. Next, we have a PURPOSE. We’re not in this world by accident. God created us to be His masterpieces because He has a specific purpose for our lives. He has prepared ways for us to make a difference in the lives of family, friends, and the community. Most importantly, we are LOVED. In fact, God loved us so much that He couldn’t leave us broken in sin. Instead, He sent Jesus who freely brings us forgiveness and restores us to be His masterpiece.
BBQ SUCCESS There was a fantastic turn out of school families, church families, and neighbors at the Mt. Calvary Community BBQ last Saturday! Perfect weather, excellent food, and great music are additional pieces of what made the day a success. Of course children enjoyed the bounce house, crafts, and face-painting as well. A special THANK YOU to many parents and HOPE Club students who helped out with different jobs throughout the afternoon.
NEWS FROM 7th GRADE WELCOME BACK! We are excited to be back for a new school year. It is hard to believe one week is already complete. Seventh grade is off to a great start. We are studying Old Testament History in Religion class. We started by discussing how we are God’s Masterpieces and each of us is unique. We decorated painter’s palettes to tell about ourselves. These are on display in our classroom. During Reading class we are reading and discussing a book titled, So B. It. The mother in the book only knows 23 words. The 7th grade was challenged with deciding which 23 words they would want to know. Many thought of family names, hungry, safety, bathroom and most important of all God. We feel seventh grade is the best class there is, we work hard and are challenged daily. We have also already starting talking about where we want to go to high school and making good choices. We hope you are having a great start to the year also! Have a good weekend.

The HOPE Club’s servant event at Bethesda’s Camp Matz this summer was fantastic! Each Mt. Calvary volunteer was paired up with an individual with cognitive or developmental disabilities for the week of camp. Activities with campers included daily devotions, painting bird houses, tie dying, parachute games, and a campfire with camp songs. Smiles beamed on campers’ faces as they had the opportunity to participate in these experiences in the midst of nature. Throughout the week, Mt. Calvary volunteers gained a deeper understanding and sensitivity to those with disabilities and found great joy in spending time with their special campers. You are encouraged to check out pictures from the week that are posted on the bulletin board outside the gym. Did you know that students generally lose 2 1/2 months of learning in reading and math over the summer? Many students of Mt. Calvary will defy this statistic as they participate in Summer School. Summer School at Mt. Calvary will take place June 18 – July 12. We’re looking forward to approximately 40 students participating between 5K and 6th Grade.
Just over one more week of school before summer vacation! You sure can tell in first grade! We are busy finishing up all kinds of things in first grade! We wrote a paragraph about being in first grade this week, began our first grade memory book, and took our last spelling test. We also began reading our final chapter book Caps For Sale. This is a great story that allows students to identify many story elements including characters, setting, problem, solution, and main idea. The first grade class wishes everyone a fun and safe summer! ~A special note from Mrs. Beckman- Keep Reading ALL Summer!
