True Rest

In the grand scheme of things, I suppose it is no coincidence that in this coming Sunday's Gospel Lesson, on this Fourth of July weekend, Jesus speaks of "rest." The Lord knows what He is doing. And what He is doing is to give us a restful weekend, and then use His Word on Sunday morning to remind us what true rest really is.

I really like the way one commentator translates Jesus' words in Matthew 11: "Are you having a real struggle? Come to me! Are you carrying a big load on your back? Come to me -- I'll give you a rest! Pick up my yoke and put it on; take lessons from me, I'll be gentle with you! The last thing in my heart is to give you a hard time. You'll see -- rest you need, and rest you shall have. My yoke is easy to wear, my load is easy to bear."

Jesus invites and encourages us to come to Him with all our burdens, trials, and struggles. True "rest" comes from Him who forgives sins. The "load" of guilt and shame has been lifted. We are free to rest in Him. What a gift!

Pray that Mt. Calvary would be a place of spiritual "rest" for all who enter its doors! Bring others to Sunday morning worship at Mt. Calvary so that they find the rest they need for their soul! Tell others about the Savior who invites all people into His true rest!
