"One little word can fell him." Those are words from Martin Luther's great Reformation hymn, "A Mighty Fortress." One little word can fell whom? Why, the devil, of course! But what is that "one little word"?
It's always been my opinion that the word is "Jesus"! The reason is given in Mark 1:21-34. It tells of Jesus driving out a demon. He is able to do so because He is the very Word of God. He has authority over all creation, especially and including demons. Jesus commands an unclean spirit to leave a man, and the unclean spirit has no choice but to leave the man.
Needless to say, our authority over any kind of evil spirit, evil urge, or evil sin, is sadly lacking. We have no authority. But Jesus does. And it was that authority that drove the devil out of our hearts and souls when the very name of Jesus was spoken over us at our Baptism. "We tremble not, we fear no ill...he shall not overpower us!"
Pray for our church, that we would all, collectively and individually, enjoy the authority of Jesus over sin and the devil in our lives. Bring others to worship at Mt. Calvary, where God's authority over evil will be provided for each and every worshiper. Tell others about Jesus, who has the authority to drive out demons! |
